

Why in an AI‑Infused World, the Human Has Never Been More Important

As organisations accelerate the adoption of artificial intelligence, a fundamental assumption has quietly taken hold: that smarter machines will inevitably reduce human risk, human error, and human dependency. This plenary challenges that assumption.
In an AI‑infused world, the human has never been more important.
This session explores why human interaction remains central to the functioning of organisations, cultures, and communities, even as AI tools, platforms, and decision systems proliferate at unprecedented speed. It argues that the future is not one of replacement, but of harmony: where AI augments human capability, and humans remain accountable for judgement, values, trust, and safety.
AI is changing how work is done, how decisions are made, and how authority is perceived. But it is not changing the fundamental truth that organisations are social systems. They are built on relationships, shared meaning, trust, challenge, and ethical judgement. When those human elements weaken, technology does not compensate, it amplifies failure.
The presentation explores how AI increasingly targets human behaviour rather than systems. Deepfakes, synthetic identities, voice cloning, automated persuasion, and AI‑driven manipulation exploit trust, urgency, hierarchy, and social norms. These threats bypass traditional controls and place unprecedented pressure on human decision‑making. In this environment, safety can no longer be defined purely by technical assurance. Safety is behavioural, cultural, and human‑centred.
A core theme of the session is that Human Risk Management must evolve alongside AI adoption. Organisations cannot treat AI as a technical layer bolted onto existing culture. They must understand how people interact with AI, how trust is formed, how over‑reliance and automation bias emerge, and how accountability can quietly erode when decisions are delegated to machines. Without intentional design, AI risks creating distance between people, reducing dialogue, challenge, and shared understanding at the very moment they are most needed.
The session also raises a critical question for leaders, boards, and practitioners:
Will AI drive cultural homogenisation—or will human behaviour drive tribalisation?
As AI systems optimise for efficiency, consistency, and scale, there is a real risk of cultural flattening: where nuance, local context, dissent, and diversity of thought are smoothed away. At the same time, humans respond to uncertainty by clustering, forming tribes, echo chambers, and in‑groups defined by belief rather than evidence. The tension between these forces has profound implications for governance, ethics, security, and trust.
Rather than offering a binary answer, the presentation argues that the outcome depends on human choices. AI will not determine culture, people will. Leadership behaviours, challenge norms, psychological safety, and ethical clarity will shape whether AI becomes a unifying force or a fragmenting one. Human interaction is the moderating influence that prevents both unchecked automation and destructive polarisation.
Importantly, the session reframes AI safety not as a control problem, but as a human capability problem. Safe AI use depends on education, critical thinking, verification behaviours, and the confidence to question outputs, especially when they appear authoritative or convincing. It requires organisations to invest not just in AI governance frameworks, but in human competence, trust, and accountability.
