Went into the ISACA e-symposium and have a look at Paul Hoshall’s presentation on “Use of CAATs”. Just something out of the subject but still related to CAATs.
In my opinion, “data integrity” is an end-to-end assurance process (from data input, data processing, to data output) that involves the accuracy, completeness, consistency and authorization of data. So, when using CAATs such as ACL, I often get irritated when some audit managers used solely CAATs to justify his/her audit objective of apps data integrity assurance (such as “Review of IT controls over X apps system to ensure data integrity”). Hence, when we talk about data integrity audit, we should therefore consider review the data element/source of data input, review input condition constraints, data characteristics at database table definition, database relationship between database entities, data output & etc. CAATs only assist in part of data integrity testing, and the usage of CAATs normally don’t have enough coverage of end-to-end audit process. Just my 2 cents! :)
Anyway, I am looking forward for next e-Symposium on Auditing O/S on 20 March! cya there!

WELL SAID Bryan!!!
I think we need to remember the computer application is only as good as the user using it! As the saying goes:
"Let the computers do the processing and the human do the thinking".

Agreed 100%.
When we actually looking at CAATs software, we did thought about its added values. Still, my colleagues has decided that it may help in establishing or confirming some of our findings but to rely solely on it would be auditors' nightmare...:-) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Nadheen

Arrgggg… missed yesterday e-Symposium. Sigh!
This round of online presentation was about auditing operating systems (RACF, Unix/Win/AS400) . It’s quite practical and quite useful for IS auditors. Was too tired yesterday and totally forget about it… :(
Heard from some of the participants that the presentation was good! Anyway, the presentation materials are not available at the moment. Have to wait till they are archived. Hmm… probably next time.
